"Stuck In The Middle With You" 1/?

It was a terrible frantic day at the White House. Everyone had there job to do and then some. So many things were going on and everyone was overloaded, which also made everyone a bit crabby. The problem was there was too many problems, Toby and Sam had their work cut out for them and a deadline that was approaching to quick. CJ had to deal with a shockingly large amount of worthless news items that everyone seemed to be stressing on. Leo was trying to keep the President on track, from meeting to meeting, and having to do his job at the same time. That left Josh. Josh had been at the office by 5 am, and was going strong. He was in charge of seeing how everyone was coming, keeping everyone on schedule, talking to senators and basically running around like a chicken with his head cut off.

"Donna! Whereís Donna? Donna?" Josh yelled as he went from room, to room, without stopping to hear an answer.

"Ya. Right here?" She said as she waved her hand in his face.

"Where have you been all day?" He said with a little agrivation in his voice.

"Well, I was at my desk. Then you sent me on a series of meaningless tasks, and I have been pretty busy with that all day." She said defensively.

"Oh ya, right. Ok, well, weíve got something bigger. What are you doing right now?" He said rather impatiently.

"Iím talking to you." She said as she lightly shrugged her shoulders.

"I mean, workwise." He said as he rubbed his forehead, agressively.

"Nothing really. Why??" She said, starting to get worried.

"Letís go." He said as he took her by the arm as they walked out of the White House.

"Leo, how are things going?" President Bartlet said to his friend and Chief of Staff.

"Fine, Mr. President." He said, not really understanding the relevance of the question.

"Are you sure, you seem a little, tense." He said as he peared above his reading glasses. It was the first time all day that they had both had a quiet moment. They, and the whole staff had been on hyper drive all day and the President thought it would be a good time to catch up.

"Well, sir we are running a country and all." He said as he finally put down the packet of paper and looked his friend in the eyes.

"That hint of sarcasm tells me that you are fine. And how about the rest of them?" The President said, just happy to not be reading anymore bills at the moment.

"Well, CJ is a little stressed and Toby and Sam are basically at each others throats, but I think thats a good sign." Leo said with a nod.

"And what about Josh?" The President said, noticing that he left out one.

"Well, I saw him this morning and he was buzzing around here like a maniac. I was a little scared, but I let it go. But I havenít seen him in hours, I just thought I had missed him, but now that I am thinking of it, no one has seen him in a while." Leo said with an expression that looked confused. Suddenly Toby came in and broke up the President and Leoís quiet time.

"We need you."

"Ok, well, go find Donna and have her track down Josh." The President said as he began to stand.

"Yes, Mr. President." Leo replied.

"Oh, my God. Oh my God." Josh said as he put his hands on his face.

"Oh, Josh, come on! Itís not that bad." Donna said as she looked out on the completely packed Capital Freeway.

"Not that bad! We have been sitting here for 2 hours and we havenít moved an inch! They must be going mad trying to find me!" Josh said as he turned to face her and slammed his hands on the wheel.

"Sorry to burst you bubble, but the only person who looks for you is me, and Iím right here with you." Donna said as she gave Josh the eye.

"People look for me." Josh said, a little hurt.

"Who?" Donna replied as she turned to face him and put her hands on her hips. Josh knew when she did that, that she meant business

"Well, people DO look for me." Josh said as he lowered his tone and looked back to the road.

"Only when they want to chew you out!" Donna said as she raised her voice

"Hey, hey...well." Josh said as he went from hurt, to agreement. Donna just smiled a bit and nodded her head.

"See, itís not that bad. Letís see whatís on the radio." She said as Josh tried to smile, and she leaned over and flipped the dial.

"Hey, Leo, have you seen Josh?" Toby said as he came up behind Leo in the hall.

"No, have you seen Donna?" Leo replied, and Toby could obviously tell he was stressed.

"Nooo, they are both gone?" Toby said, starting to understand Leoís stress.

"Ya, apparently!" Leo said as he threw up his arms.

"Ha, ha. They are probably off having a nooner." Toby said in his dry voice.

"Donít say that." Leo said, as he stopped and looked Toby in the eye.

"Sorry. But you know itís true." Toby said perfectly calm.

"Ya, shut up." Leo said as he walked away from Toby.

They were right in the middle of singing " The Funky Comadina" when Josh suddenly realized something.

"Funk...oh, wait, what time is it." He said as he looked at Donna with worry in his eyes.

"About 3:30, wow, we have been in here for 4 and a half hours!" Donna said with a smile, then looked at Joshís face as it dropped.

"Ah, oh, I think my brain is swelling." Josh said as he sunk his head into his hands.

"Josh, are you ok? Wow, you donít look good." Donna said as she put her hand on his shoulder.

"Uamm...." Josh said with no intention of making sense.

"It will be ok, just use your cell phone and call them to tell them that we are stuck in a traffic jam, they should understand." Donna said trying to make him feel better. She knew that it was bad that they were stuck, and Leo probably was going crazy trying to find him, but she was trying to lighten the situation.

"Ya, I would do that except it is pretty hard to do that without a phone." Josh said as he looked up and made eye contact with his assistant.

"You didnít." Donna said, not really wanting to know the answer.

"Ya." Josh said as he let his voice trail at the end.

"You left your phone on your desk." Donna said staring at Josh.

"I left my phone on my desk." He said with his head down.

"Ha ha ha." Donna soon began laughing, and eventually picking up speed.

"It is not funny Donna." Josh said with anger in his eyes.

"It actually is, when you think about it." Donna said still laughing.

"How?" Josh said, still NOT laughing.

"Well, we have been stuck in this car for 4 hours goin on 5 and it doesnít look like itís gonna clear up anytime soon. And you are so gonna get it when we do get back and you canít let them know what is going on because you are irresponsible, and you donít have your phone."

"Donna." Josh said, in complete calmness.

"Ok, sorry." Donna said as she tried to stop laughing. Silence settled as she looked out over the traffic until it was cut by more laughing, by Josh.

"Hey, I thought it wasnít funny!" Donna said as she began laughing too, and she hit his arm.

"Well, it wasnít until I thought about it." He said between a laugh. The two sat there in Joshís car and laughed for 15 minutes or so.

"Oh, we have to get out of this car, or Iím going to go crazy." Josh said, wiping the tears from his eyes.

"I think it is too late." Donna said, smiling.

"Ya."

Leo walked into the oval office and waited for the President to finish talking. He had spent more time trying to track down Josh and Donna then things concerning the country, and this aggrivated him. But, once he couldnít find them after hours, he began to worry.

"Whatís up Leo?" The President said as he sat down on his desk.

"Well, Josh and Donna are missing. And I mean missing." Leo said with his eyebrows raised.

"Missing, are you sure?" The President said, not wanting to believe.

"Yes, sir. No one has seen them since about 11a.m., and I called around and I guess he was supposed to visit Senator Williams at 12p.m., but never showed."

"Hmm.." The President said, trying to rack his brain.

"Ya, I was going to strangle him 3 hours ago, but now Iím worried, and I donít know where to start." Leo said, scratching his head.

"Ok, well, itís Josh. So, lets give them a few more hours, before we do anything. Come tell me anything you find out." The President said, nodding at himself.

"Yes, sir."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"So, what now?" Josh said.
"I donít know." Donna said. They had been couped up in that car for 5 and a half hours and were getting cramped and bored.
"You have any candy?" Josh said, almost pathetically.
"Haa, what was that?" Donna said, as she looked at him funny.
"What? I want some candy." He said with a smirk.
"Ok, Iíll see what I can do." Donna said as she digged in her bag and pulled out some mints.
"Here."
"Oh, goody!!" Josh said like a little Swedish boy.
"You are so weird." Donna said laughing.
"Yes I am. And you have no idea." He said, raising one eyebrow.
"Ok, so, really, we need to get something to do. You have any playing cards?" Donna said looking in the glove compartment.
"Ya, Donna. I forgot my phone and my beeper, but I just happen to have a deck of playing cards." Josh said in his normal sarcastic tone, and then made a face that made Donna break into another laughing fit.
"Ok, oww, I have an idea. Letís play truth or dare!" Donna said as she immediately got giddy. Josh turned around and was intriuged by the idea. There are plenty of things he would like to ask Donna, Ďthis could get interestingí he thought.
"Ok." Josh said as he turned to face her.
