Toby invited CJ to his apartment the next evening. She was quite surprised when she arrived there. The lights were dimmed, and the dining room as illuminated only by the candles on the table.
"Pulling out all the stops?" She teased.
"You could say that." Toby mumbled, looking down at his shoes. His discomfort was very apparent.
She smiled a little bit. "I am saying that."
"Okay." He took her coat and hung it in the closet.
She sat down on the couch. "Dinner smells good."
"You sound surprised."
She laughed. "Maybe that's because I am."
"Do you remember fixing me pancakes one morning?"
"You were trying to cheer me up. I was upset over something and you came over Sunday morning and tried to fix pancakes for me."
"I vaguely remember that."
"It was the biggest mess I've seen."
"I can't cook breakfast foods."
"Trust me I know that." She laughed.
The next few hours passed quickly. CJ was pleasantly surprised that the food was not only edible, but also quite good. They were sitting on the couch drinking some wine when Toby pulled out a small jewelry box.
CJ looked at the box, she knew that he was going to propose to her now. She looked up as she felt him gently squeeze her hand. He opened the box and inside there was a diamond ring. It was an antique setting, and she immediately knew she loved it.
"Marry me." He said, simply.
She looked pointedly at him. "I thought you were going all out."
"I'm not getting down on one knee."
"Why? I'll help you up." She laughed.
"Because I'm not going to."
"Okay." She smiled. "The answer is yes."
He smiled a little bit and slipped the ring on her finger. "You do like it? If you don't we can go chose one that you would like."
She gently touched his hand. "It's perfect the way it is."
CJ smiled and then gently kissed him. He kissed her back, pulling her into his arms and holding her tightly. She rested her forehead against his. "We seem to do that rather well."
"Yes we do. We should practice so it will be better." He said softly.
She laughed and kissed him again.
"Stay tonight." Toby whispered as he pulled away.
"Stay with me tonight."
She nodded. "Okay."
