HEART OF THE CAMPAIGN - Epilogue
The election was over - Jed Bartlet had won by the biggest margin ever.
Katrina was just putting the finishing touches on her makeup for the Inauguration Balls when the phone rang.
"You about ready for our date?" It was Leo. "I'm just about there."
"You couldn't ring the bell, or honk?"
"I just wanted to tell you something before I got there...your job has been eliminated. You got Jed elected with a Democratic Congress, got the offices closed down, so I guess your job is finished."
She sat on the bed listening to him talk to her about their accomplishments of the past few months. She looked down at the Christmas present on her finger. Jed's Presidency would last for four years, but her love for Leo would last forever. She looked up and there he stood, talking to her on his cell phone and smiling.
"I don't know what I was thinking when I got messed up with you?" She said shaking her head.
"You know what they say? Be careful what you wish for!"
They walked down the stairs "What's this?" There were several pieces of luggage in the foyer.
"I'm moving in." He said matter-of-factly. "Since you no longer work for the DNC, I don't think there's any appearance of conflict."
She wrapped her arms around him and smiled. "So now I'm unemployed. Won't there be a conflict when I'm listed on the unemployment rolls?"
"I'll keep you busy." he started to nuzzle her neck. "You've got a wedding to plan."
"Two tickets to Vegas won't take long."
"I don't think you'll get that plan past Abbey." He continued to leave kisses on her neck and shoulders.
"Oh, I hate to stop you," trying not to get makeup on his tux, "but we'll need to leave before we mess up my makeup."
"This will be our first real appearance as a couple. Like a first date."
"Mr. McGarry, I must tell you." She gave him a coy look, "I don't put out on the first date."
He laughed and held her tighter, "I said 'like' a first date..."
"Leo," the President pulled him aside. "I didn't tell you earlier, but Hollingsworth from New York told me he's not running for re-election. If you left, say next year and moved to New York we could get you in on Mid-term elections. You've been Secretary of Labor, Chief of Staff, how does Senator McGarry sound?"
Leo was surprised at the President's suggestion, but he already had a plan for his future. "Well Sir, thanks for thinking of me, but Senator Windsor from New Hampshire is also up for election at midterm, I've been asked to help run a campaign to take John Rogers' seat back."
"Katrina? She wants to be a Senator?" Jed thought Katrina was perfectly suited for public office. She was one of John's biggest assets as well as his. He smiled to himself because he knew it wouldn't guarantee him a vote in the Senate.
"She wants it, and I know the country will be better for it. The downside is I think she's going to raid the Staff. CJ for sure, maybe Donna."
"That will make Danny and Josh happy. Gets rid of some of that 'conflict of interest' stuff you're always harping on." He became concerned, if Katrina was raiding his Staff, how far would she go? "And what about you?"
"You won't get rid of me that easily, I've won four more years with you, Sir. Then I'll write my memoirs and do the lecture circuit on how we changed the world." Leo looked over at Abbey and Katrina with their heads together talking. "Well, you said it Jed, I've been Leo McGarry, Secretary of Labor, Chief of Staff. How about in a couple of years we put a McGarry in the White House?"
The President looked at him in surprise. Leo had never mentioned ambitions for the high office.
"Then I will be, Leo McGarry, husband of President Katrina Bartlet-McGarry."
