"I was caught by your smile under the blushing moon
You were the only one left there
And words poured like wine over an open wound
You were the only one left there."
CJ had watched Toby leave the crowded ballroom. She knew that he wasn't the fondest of these fundraising events, he thought he was more suited to sitting behind a desk than schmoozing with the rich and superficial. She noted that didn't stop him from looking very good in his tuxedo. With her eyes, she followed him as he stepped through the ornate doorway and onto the outside balcony. Without even realizing what she was doing, she finished up her conversation and went to join him.
Toby smiled as CJ silently walked up to him. She was wearing a long fitted gown in a blue grey colour, which Toby believed was the perfect match for her eyes. She must have noticed him leaving the function and coming out here.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" CJ gestured to the water garden below them, which sparkled under the moonlight. The fragranced plants sent up their perfume and she inhaled it deeply as she turned to face Toby.
"Yeah. I'm surprised that a part of nature is actually making me appreciate it, but this garden is doing the job quite admirably." Toby gave her a wry smile and looked at the crowd inside. "I suppose we should be inside, working the crowd."
CJ shook her head. "Nah, it's getting quieter in there, no one will even miss us." She suddenly wondered what she was really saying. Was she trying to tell Toby something? Would he even listen?
"Pale light falls over a broken bed
You were the only one left there
Cold hands in mine, lips bruised and black
You were the only one left there"
Toby could never be sure if CJ intended to say some of the things that she said to him. Too many times her words came impulsively, without being thought out. Toby knew how hurtful the impulsive words could be; he still remembered the fights between Andi and himself, the loud, hurtful screaming matches where too much was always said. That had been part of the problem between the two of them, although words were part of their lives, they had both thrown them at each other with too much ease, too much carelessness.
He knew that he had been gun shy since the divorce. He hadn't dated, telling himself that he was too busy helping to run the country to spend time on the frivolous notion of romance. But it didn't mean that he didn't want love, someone who he could share his life with, someone who would make him want to go home at night.
Again he looked at CJ. She really did look beautiful there, the moonlight highlighting her features. Out of all the women he came across in his life, CJ was the only one who he thought he might love. In fact, he admitted to himself, he was in love with her. But love was too impulsive.
"With sky born blue grey eyes
Sky born blue grey eyes."
CJ shivered slightly as she looked at Toby. He was gazing at her, a curious look in his eyes. She wondered if she'd ever be able to get beyond that exterior of his eyes which always told her that he had been hurt before, that he didn't want to be hurt again. CJ knew that she wanted, more than anything to be able to get under that cover, to be able to mean something to him.
Toby looked deep into CJ's eyes. They were an open picture to him, he could always read them. He could see the anger in them when someone had done something wrong by her, the hurt when her opinion had not been considered, the jest when she cracked one of her jokes. Now all he could see in them was worry and love.
"CJ..." Toby had to be impulsive now. It was terrifying and may be hurtful, but it would be real. "Why did you come out here when I did? Did you follow me for a reason?" Without realizing what he was doing, he had held out his hand to her face, cupping it gently on her cheek.
CJ became flustered at his touch. "I don't know, my feet seemed to take me here of there own accord. Look I'm sorry, I should just go back inside..." Before CJ could complete her thought, Toby's lips were on hers. Their kiss was deeper than she had expected, full of emotion and searching. She forgot about the event inside, and her job and almost everything as Toby's arms tightened around her and she leaned into him.
Toby didn't know if this was the right thing to do when you looked at the overall picture. It may not have even been the smart thing to do right now. But as he lost himself in CJ's kiss, he decided that he didn't care about the repercussions, this was right where he wanted to be.
"Shut up and kiss me now, kiss me now, kiss me now
I have been patient but patience is gone
Shut up and kiss me now, kiss me now, kiss me now
All of my vision has blurred into one
Just shut up, just shut up, just shut up and kiss me now."
