Part 4

"So basically we're going to have to wait and see." Abbey stood in the center of the Oval Office, filling everyone in on Sam's condition. "I'm sorry, but that's all I can tell you for now."

"I'm going out there." Josh said resolutely. "Donna!"

"I'm right behind you, stop yelling."

"Sorry. I need to you to get me on the next flight."

"Sure." She gave him a supportive smile and walked out of the room.

"What caused the accident?" Toby asked.

"The motorcade was hit by a truck carrying logs. The driver fell asleep at the wheel and the truck ran through the intersection, it's a miracle that no one was killed." CJ replied, glancing at her notes.

"We don't know that yet." Leo took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose.

Cassie and Greg were standing outside Sam's hospital room waiting for Kate to emerge when a young woman approached them and launched herself into Greg's arms. "Daddy." She pulled away and looked into his eyes. "How's Sam?"

"It's going to be a few more hours before they're sure about anything. Your mom's in with him."

She turned and faced Cassie, holding out her hand. "I'm Sam's sister Nikki. It's nice to finally meet you in person."

"You too." Cassie shook her hand.

Kate emerged from Sam's room and hugged her daughter. "Someone else can go in now."

Greg gave Cassie a worried glance. "You go ahead."

"Thank you." She hurried into the room. Cassie sat down in the chair next to Sam's bed. From where she sat Cassie could see that his left arm was heavily bandaged and he had a large bruise on the left side of his face. She clasped his good hand in hers and pressed it to her cheek. "I love you, I've forgotten how to live without you. You can't leave me now."

The only response was the steady beat of the heart monitor, assuring her that he was, at least, still alive.

6 hours later.........

Cassie sat on the couch outside Sam's room, slowing sipping a cup of coffee. "Hey kiddo."

She looked up and found Josh standing over her. "Joshy." Cassie sprang to her feet and hugged him tightly.

"Any change?" Josh sat down and wrapped his arm around her shoulders.

"He was still out when I left a few minutes ago. The doctor is examining him."

"Is his family here?"

"They went to the cafeteria."

Josh and Cassie both got to their feet as Dr. Phillips hurried out of the room. "He's starting to come around and he's asking for you." He motioned to Cassie.

"Oh thank God." She followed him back into the room. "Hey, how you feeling?" She approached the bed and kissed his forehead.

"Like I got hit by a truck." Sam attempted to smile at her.

"Mr. Seaborn I'm doctor Phillips. You gave us quite a scare, but you're doing much better now.

Sam simply nodded to the doctor's statement, his eyes locked with Cassie's. "I love you."

She began to cry tears of relief and kissed him again. "I love you too."

Leo had realized several hours ago that there was nothing useful he could do at the White House so he headed home around ten thirty. He and Margaret were preparing to lie down and make a futile attempt at sleep when the phone rang. "McGarry."

"Leo, it's Josh. He's awake, they're saying he'll be alright."

Leo let out a deep breath. "Thank god." He smiled at Margaret and she leaned her head against his chest. "What are they saying about the damage to his leg?"

"I don't think his doctor knows yet."

"Okay.... How's Cassie?"

"She seems fine."

"Good. Go check on him, call me tomorrow."

"I will. Goodnight."

"Nite."

"He's okay?" Margaret looked up at Leo.

"Yeah. Well, he's alive at least."

She nodded her head. "Let's go to sleep."

Leo moved so he could lay his hand against her middle. "Yes, let's savor the few peaceful nights we have left." He drifted off to sleep, feeling the steady kicking against his hand.
