Part 5
The next night....
Margaret blinked her eyes open and looked at the clock. A blinding red three thirty am stared back at her. She sat up slowly, trying to figure out why she was awake. She watched Leo sleep for a few minutes and lay down again. She was about to drift back to sleep when a sharp pain made her sit up again.
She leaned over and nudged Leo's shoulder. "Leo." When she didn't get a response she sharply poked his side. "Leo, wake up."
This got his attention and he blinked open his eyes. "We're out of ice cream, I'll get some more in the morning." He closed his eyes again.
Margaret yanked the blankets off him. "You need to get up now!"
Leo slowly opened his eyes and sat up. "What is it?"
"I'm having contractions."
He stared at her blankly. "Huh."
"I'm in labor. Get dressed." Margaret reached for her shirt from the chair next to the bed.
What she was saying finally sunk in and he jumped to his feet. "Oh my God!" Leo hurriedly located his pants and pulled them on. "Shirt...where the hell is my shirt?"
Margaret finished getting dressed and handed him his shirt. She grabbed his arm. "I really need for you not to panic right now." She tightened her grip as another pain cut through her body.
"Sorry." He looked frantically around the room. "Keys.... ok, my keys are downstairs with your bag." He took her arm. "Let's go."

Sam lay staring at the ceiling of his hospital room. His parents had gone home and his sister had gone back to whichever one of her boyfriends she was living with now. He had managed to talk Josh into sleeping at his mother's, but Cassie had adamantly refused to leave. Sam knew that there was no point in arguing with her. His doctor told him he should get some rest, but his body simply refused to sleep any longer. So instead he rolled onto his uninjured side and watched Cassie sleep, curled up in the chair next to his bed. In the morning he was meeting with a physical therapist, she wanted to assess the extent of the damage and decide what course of therapy would be best. They weren't saying it, but Sam got the distinct message that he would probably never recover fully. He moved onto his back and slowly lifted his left arm, but he only managed to raise it several inches off the bed before his strength gave out.
"Sam?"
He turned his head to the right and found Cassie staring at him, her eyes half open. "Go back to sleep." He brushed a stray hair out of her eyes.
"You need to rest."
"I will. I promise. Now go back to sleep." He smiled at her.
"Kay." She closed her eyes.
He went back to staring at the ceiling.

"One more push and we should have a baby."
Leo winced as Margaret dug her nails into his hand as she cried out. He immediately stopped worrying about his hand when he heard the baby cry. "Oh my God!" Leo looked down at the tiny, crying infant as the doctor laid it on Margaret's chest.
"It's a girl."
"Wow." Margaret looked at her daughter with amazement.
Leo leaned down to kiss her forehead. "I love you."
"Me too." She gently handed the baby to the nurse.
"We have a daughter."
"Yeah." She grabbed his hand again as another contraction came over her. "I almost forgot this wasn't over."
The doctor looked up at her. "Just breathe for a few minutes." Margaret leaned her head back and took a deep breath. She continued breathing for a few minutes. "Okay, go ahead and push." She tightened her hold on his arm and not long after the room was filled once again with baby cries. "It's a boy." He gently laid the baby on her chest.
"Hi there." Margaret smiled down at her son.
Leo kissed the side of her face. "A boy and a girl."
"You were right."
He kissed her again. "Don't worry, I won't let it get to my head."
