Part 3
"Abbey, can Leo and I at least go watch the game?" Jed whined.
"Yes, but stay out of the way."
"Fine, come on Leo. Toby?"
"Sure." Toby followed Leo and the President out of the house.
Abbey turned her attention to Margaret. "Did you want to go with them?"
"Not especially. I think I'll stay in here where it's nice and warm."
"I agree. How are you feeling?" Abbey looked at her closely.
"I'm alright." Margaret eyed the first lady suspiciously and realized that
Cassie must have told her. "She told you, didn't she?"
"I was worried about you, don't get mad at Cassie."
"I'm not, it's ok."
"So, are you really feeling ok?"
"Yes, how about you?"
"I'm fine.... So, when are you and Leo going to tell everyone else?"
"Tomorrow."
"Ok. Oh, I almost forgot, congratulations."
"Thank you ma'am."
They heard yelling from outside and Abbey turned her head towards the front door.
"That doesn't sound good. I'd better make sure we have enough ice packs."
"What on earth are they doing?" Margaret got up and walked to the window. She
looked out and started to laugh.
Abbey walked out of the kitchen. "What's going on?"
"Josh just picked Cassie up and tried to carry her off the court, but she kicked him
in the leg. Who came up with this game?"
"Cassie and Jed came up with it when she was in junior high, back when they were
inseparable. They were a lot less violent though."
Margaret noticed a sad look come over Abbey's face as she mentioned Jed and Cassie.
"What was she like as a kid?"
Abbey stood next to Margaret and looked out the window. "When Cassie was little she
was the sweetest, most loving little girl; she was permanently attached to her father's
side." She closed her eyes and leaned back against the wall. "Then one day all
of that changed, as long as I live I don't think I'll ever understand why."
Margaret was trying to come up with something to say when the door burst open and everyone
entered the house. "How was the game?"
Josh and Sam hung their heads as Leo and Jed began to laugh. "Come on Josh, tell
Abbey about the game." Jed nudged him.
"We wiped the court with them." Cassie announced, hugging CJ.
"It was pathetic, they got their asses kicked by girls." Leo said when he
stopped laughing.
"So you're saying women can't play sports?" Margaret leveled a gaze at Leo.
"Yeah Leo, what was that supposed to mean?" CJ gave him a dirty look.
"I apologize, I didn't mean that. Let's talk about something else now." He
stammered.
"It was still a sorry sight." Toby shook his head.
Sam leaned against Cassie's shoulder. "I think I threw my back out."
"Baby." CJ teased.
Cassie sighed loudly. "You better not be screwing with me." He gave her a pained
look and grabbed his back. "Fine, go upstairs and lay down, I'll get the ice."
"Thanks." He kissed her cheek and slowly made his way to the stairs.
Abbey followed Cassie into the kitchen and pulled an ice pack out of the freezer.
"Here, I always keep plenty of these handy, but I've got ten bucks that says he's
faking."
"Well, duh." Cassie rolled her eyes.
"I've gotten that look from your father plenty of times."
"He just wants me to feel bad for him losing."
"I don't think that's all he wants." Abbey said, smirking at her.
"Ewww Mom! When you say that, it's just gross."
"So if someone else said it, it wouldn't be gross?"
"You got it." Cassie took the ice pack and went upstairs.
