Jed and Abbey lay very still on the blanket for a long time, just looking into each other's eyes. Finally, Jed broke the silence, "What's been bothering you today? Lilli Mayes even came to my office..."
Abbey sighed, "I just woke up in a bad mood, Jed. On top of that, I hurt all over..."
"Your joints giving you problems today?"
"I know, Jed" Abbey replied. "It's a displaced pain. The problem is that my right leg is shorter than my left... You know this, we've been through this. There isn't anything I can do about it. It's been like this since I was fifteen years old."
"Yeah, I know." Jed responded. "I just hate seeing you in pain."
Abbey nodded and then brought her hand to his face, "I'm sorry I yelled at you this morning... I didn't mean what I said."
Jed nodded, "Apology accepted... You know our ice cream is melted."
Abbey smiled at him, "Yeah... I know."
"We can't eat it."
"No, we can't." Abbey agreed.
"We're going to have to find something else to do..."
"I think we can think of something."
"I think we can too." Jed replied as he rolled on top of his wife.
