Dream For Tomorrow 1/?

by SarahK

Josh Lyman opened the door to his office and was startled to see a sleeping figure on his couch. He smiled as he realized it was Donna Moss, his assistant, curled up under the hand-knitted afghan which normally hung over the back of the couch. The afghan had slipped down her arms, and Josh stepped over to her, pulling it back up to her chin. She looked so peaceful that he didn't want to disturb her, even to ask why she was sleeping in his office. He gazed at Donna a moment longer, then sat down at his desk and pulled a thick file out of his briefcase.

Donna awoke and slowly opened her eyes. She yawned and sat up, remembering that she needed to get out of the office before Josh got there. She turned her head, and that's when she noticed Josh seated at his desk. She jumped up.

"Josh!" she exclaimed, embarassed. "What are you doing here?"

"I could ask you the same thing," replied Josh, chuckling softly.

"I'm sorry, I- It's-" Donna was too flustered to complete her sentence.

"Donna?"

"Yeah?"

"Breathe, then speak."

"Right. I'm sorry. It's just that my building's bein fumigated, adn I've been staying with friends, but they had to go out of town, and I couldn't get a reservation at a hotel last night, and since it's just for a few days, I figured-"

"So you're sleeping in my office?" Josh interrupted, somewhat amused.

"Yeah. I was planning to be out by the time you got here, but you're early. Why are you so early?"

"I had a few things to take care of, and I thought I'd get an early start." Josh thought a moment. "Why didn't you tell me? You can stay at my place."

"I don't think so..." replied Donna, warily.

"Come on...I have a guest room that never gets used, I can cook...sort of...and besides, it's cheaper than a hotel."

"Josh, really, I don't think it's a good idea."

"Don't make me beg, Donna. I'd just rather know that you've got a place to stay other than some roach motel, or my office."

"Excuse me? I can afford a decent hotel!"

"I'm just sayin', you shouldn't have to. Stay at my place. I promise I won't let you irritate me too much."

"Well, when you put it like that..."

"Seriously."

Donna hesitated a moment. "Okay," she finally said. This would definitely be interesting, she thought.
