Notes: I was bored one afternoon and decided to answer three
challenges. The first two are Josh and Sam talking about Josh's love
life and then Donna and Ainsley talking about Donna's love life. The
third challenge was to write Josh's proposal to Donna. It's nothing
but fluff.

Donna Moss strode into the White House early Monday morning. She knew
that it was too early for Josh to be in, so she was surprised to see
him lounging on his couch when she entered his office to do some
filing. "Josh, it's seven in the morning. What are you doing here?"
Donna asked.

"I'm just working on some papers before senior staff this morning," he
explained. "What are you doing in my office?"

"I'm doing my job, Joshua," she told him, picking up his feet that were
supported by the table. She grabbed the files then dropped his feet
back onto the table.

"Ow! Donna, what are you doing?"

"Don't you ever wonder how your office gets so neat from the time you
leave at one in the morning to the time you get here at nine?" Donna
asked, walking over to his filing cabinet.

Josh sat and thought about it. "You do it?" He asked, smiling.

"Yes, I come in every morning and clean up your messes."

Josh stood and stretched. "I'm going to go see if Sam is awake. I
think he spent the night again."

"I'll be here," she said.

"Actually, can you run this down to Ainsley? I saw her come in and I
need her to look over this for me."

"Sure," Donna said, taking the file.

Josh held onto the file and smiled at Donna. He then shocked her by
leaning over and kissing her softly on the cheek. "Thanks for taking
care of me," then he walked out of the room, leaving Donna speechless
with his files.

"You're welcome," she whispered. She reached up and touched her cheek
that she knew was pink from flush. "Oh... my god..." She finished her
filing then walked down to the basement.

Josh walked by Toby's office, then turned back and knocked on his open
door. "Morning," he said, taking a seat across from the communications

"Why are you here?" Toby mumbled, pulling out a highlighter.

"Just came in early to catch up on some work. Why do you need a
highlighter? CJ always highlights your paper," Josh pointed out.

"Yes, but..." Toby highlighted a column in yellow to distinguish his from
her pink. "She always manages to miss something."

"I see. Is Sam in there?"

"Yes, go wake him," Toby said.

"OK," Josh stood and walked next door. He kicked Sam's legs and sat
down on a chair.

"I'm up! I'm up!" Sam bolted into a sitting position, rubbing his
eyes. "Oh, it's only you..."

"Gee, thanks," Josh mumbled. "Don't you have a bed at home?"

"Yes, but I worked late, and didn't see the need to go home," Sam
looked down at his watched, then double-checked with the clock on the
wall. "Why are you here so early?"

"I had work to do... is that so hard to imagine?"

"Well... that's why Donna comes in so early," Sam stood and crossed the
room, grabbing a clean shirt and tie.

"Does she come in every morning this early?"

"Yeah, sometimes earlier," Sam said behind the door of his closet. He
emerged buttoning his shirt with his tie around his neck. "You didn't
know that?"

"I just thought she was here before me. I don't appreciate her enough,
do I?"

Sam shook his head as he worked on his tie. "She works her ass off for

"I know," Josh whispered. Sam sat down and the two men sat in silence.

"You got something on your..."

"I kissed her..." they both spoke at the same time.

"Whoa... back it up. You kissed Donna?" Sam sat forward in his chair.

"I was handing her a file, I thanked her for taking care of me, then I
kissed her on the cheek," Josh explained.

Sam stared at him then broke into a laugh. "It's about time my

"I didn't do anything Sam..."

"Yeah you did. You kissed her," Sam said.

"What am I going to do? She's my assistant... but..."

"You love her?" Sam asked.

"Yeah, I think I do," Josh whispered. "CJ will kill me."

Sam leaned forward. "News flash Josh: I'm pretty sure CJ has been
planning this day for at least a year now."

"Huh? Why would you say that?"

"After you were shot, Donna sat in the waiting room for over twenty
four hours without sleep until she knew that you were all right. She
practically lived with you for three months, and she's pretty much at
your beck and call twenty-four hours a day. CJ has been ready to break
this story for a long time, Josh."

"So... what do I do?" Josh asked.

"Do you think she feels the same way?"

"I don't know. I mean, I guess she cares, or else she would have left
by now."

"Whatever you decided to do," Sam said, "be careful. Don't hurt her in
the process, OK?"

Josh nodded. "I'm going back to work." He got up and went back to his

"See you later," Sam called as he wandered into Toby's office. He was
still highlighting the newspaper.

"What's he going to do?" Toby mumbled.

"He'll tell her... hey wait!" Sam exclaimed.

"What, you think that glass is sound proof?" Toby asked.

"No, but..." Sam stood and walked back into his office in stunned

Donna strode down the hall in the basement of the White House. She
walked up to Ainsley's door and knocked. "Come on in!"

"Hey, Ainsley," Donna said, as she entered the office. "Josh needs you
to look over these for him," she handed her the file.

"Sure. Did he say when he needed them by?"

"No, but I know that he needs them by Wednesday morning."

"You take better care of him then he does of himself," Ainsley laughed.
Donna looked down at the floor and shuffled her shoes. "Oh no, what
did he do?"

"Nothing," Donna lied. She sighed and sank into a chair. Donna looked
up to see Ainsley leaning over her desk. "He kissed me!" Donna

Ainsley stared at her wide-eyed, and then she smiled. "Well, you have
two choices."

"Well, good, because I thought I was going to have a lot more than

"You either acknowledge it or you don't," Ainsley explained, simply.

"That's it?"

"Yes, that's it."

"That sounds too easy," Donna stated.

"Well, it's the best I could come up with on such short notice," both
women laughed.

"I have to go back to work. Josh is going to come look for me," she
waved and left the office.

Donna walked back upstairs and to her desk. She had been working for a
few minutes when she saw Josh leave his office. He headed for her
desk, stopped, and then turned back. She watched then went back to
work. Thirty minutes later, he came ten feet closer to her desk then
turned back again.

Shaking her head, Donna went to see Sam. She knocked on his door.
"Hey, Donna."

"Sam, is Josh OK?"

"What do you mean?" He choked out.

"I know nothing!" Sam slid past her, with his hands in the air, and
into Toby's closed office. Donna scoffed and went back to her desk.

"Please tell me why you have entered my office," Toby demanded.

"I got lost," Sam lied.

"Go back to work." Sam nodded at Toby and left. "Strange people I
work with."

Donna saw Josh leave his office, look her way then go to CJ's office.
By three in the afternoon, Donna was extremely curious as to what Josh
was up to. She heard his door open and quickly stood. "What are you
doing?" She asked and he froze in his tracks.

Josh took a deep breath and grabbed her hand, dragging her down the
hall. "Josh, what... where are you taking me?"

They wound their way though the halls of the White House and into the
lower levels of the basement. At the end of the last hall, there was a
secret service agent posted at the door. Josh looked at Donna and she
looked back at him with worried eyes. "Sagittarius," the both
murmured. The agent nodded and opened the door.

Donna walked down the stairs into the dark room. "Unless it's McGarry
or the President, don't let anyone down," Josh requested. The agent
nodded and closed the door behind Josh.

Donna was leaning on the table that was in the center of the room when
Josh descended the stairs. "Josh, is something wrong? Did something
happen to the President?" Josh shook his head and paced around the
table. "Will you stop!" Josh stopped and looked at Donna across the
table. "What are you doing?" She whispered.

Josh rounded the table and stood in front of her, holding Donna's
hands. "Donna..."

"What's wrong? Are you sick? You've been acting strangely all day,"
Donna squeezed his hand.

"I'm not sick. Well, I'm heartsick," Josh whispered. He looked into
Donna's eyes. "Something happened this morning, and I didn't plan it."

"In your office, you mean?" She asked.

Josh nodded. "This morning, I consciously realized something that I've
known for over a year now," he told her.

"Josh..." Donna lowered her head.

"Look at me," he lifted Donna's chin. "All these years, you've stood
by me. Through good times and bad, through my trauma and my..." he knew
not to mention the PTSD, "well, you know. I can't live without you
Donna." She stood in shocked silence. "I don't want to live without
you, Donna. I guess what I'm saying is..." Josh got down on one knee
and Donna started to cry. "Donna, will you marry me?"

"Yes, Josh," she whispered. Josh stood and enveloped her in his arms.
"I love you."

He stepped back and smiled. "I love you, too," Josh leaned down and
kissed her then hugged her close to him.

"We have an audience," she whispered. Josh turned around to see the
President on the bottom step with Leo, CJ, Toby, Sam and Ainsley all on
the stairs.

"Josh, you should have known that you can't do anything in private in
my house," Jed scolded.

"Sorry, Sir, it won't happen again."

"I hope you won't have to propose to her again," Leo said.

"He won't," Donna said, taking Josh's hand in hers.

"Come, people," Bartlet ordered.

"Yeah, you two hurry up," CJ yelled down, "I have a press conference
in twenty minutes and you both have to be there."

Josh turned back to Donna and smiled. "Can't even lose them down

"No, we can't," she whispered.

"Well, I don't have a ring for you..."

"Joshua... I expected more from you," Donna exasperated.

"I wasn't expecting to be proposing to you today!"

"You should be more prepared for these kinds of things," Donna laced
her hand with his. "I don't need a ring right now," she assured him.

"You will get your ring, Ms. Moss. I promise, you will get it."

"Maybe you could take me out on a date, first, Joshua," Donna

Josh pursed his lips in thought. "Well..." Donna swatted his arm. "All
right, all right, you can have that too. Anything else?"

"Yes... can we go to Hawaii for our honeymoon?"

"I am still your boss, who says that I will give you the time off?"
Josh scoffed.

"If you don't give me the time off..." Donna whispered in his ear.

Josh paused and looked at her, "Well, when you put it that way!"

Donna smiled and took his hand. "Come on, we have work to do."

"Yeah... you want to go out tonight?"

"I don't know," Donna said, walking up the stairs. "I'll have to check
my calendar..."

"No more gomers!"

"I know... I've already found my 'ultimate gomer!'"

"I don't know if I like that," Josh confessed.

"Too bad," Donna told him. They walked hand in hand into CJ's
pressroom, and into the rest of their lives.

The End
(Sorry, just HAD to use the "Ultimate Gomer" thing!! I love it!)
